ACCOMPLISHED PROJECTS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

In this section accomplished projects and acknowledgements are presented in the following order; managed and facilitated conferences and events, international projects, follow-up and evaluations projects, participation in international conferences and exchanges, educational work at universities/higher education institutions, educational work at Sida Civil Society Center and Sida Partnership Forum, educational work for organisations and in schools, publications, writing of applications, journalistic work for peace, human rights and sustainability, leadership and management.

Managed and facilitated conferences as well as responsibility for sessions in conferences organized by others:

Nonviolence 2023. Ocotober 20th-22nd 2023 Another Development Foundation, Swedish Fellowship of Reconcilitation, the study-association Bilda and the Swedish section of Women´s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) organized a special national event on nonviolence. Partners in the project were Umeå Association for the Sami People, Härnösand People´s High School, the study-association Studiefrämjandet, Centre for Sami Research (Vàrdduo) and Department of Political Science, Umeå University

The event was the forth after the first, second and third that was carried out November 2020, November 2021 and October 22nd. The organizers have now established the event as a annual event and forum for activists, movements and scholars. The event gathered approximately 60 people at two venues; Umeå University and Klossen – a meeting place and cultural centre for civil society and other organisations in Ålidhem, Umeå.

I was the initiatior of, and project manager for the first event, now working in collaboration with a number of people representing the organizers as well as people who were volunteers.

Homa Bay County Stakeholder Forum on Governance for Equal Health (2022). November 23rd Homa Bay County Government and Center for Rural Medicine – a research and development department within Region Västerbotten, Sweden organized a conference for stakeholders working for equal health, as well as sustainble development, in Homa Bay County.

The conference gathered approximately 75 people representing Homa Bay County Government (both the political and technical wing of the administration as well as sub-counties, and other stakeholders in Homa Bay County. UN-habitat and the funder Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) was also invited to the conference.

I was working in close collaboration with the working group in Homa Bay County, and with Yvonne Anyango, Director of CASDA – Cooperation Arena for Sustainable Development in Africa who was contracted to support the team in planning and organizing the event.

Nonviolence 2022. Ocotober 15th-17th 2022 Another Development Foundation, Swedish Fellowship of Reconcilitation, the study-association Bilda and the Swedish section of Women´s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) organized a special national event on nonviolence. Partners in the project were Umeå Association for the Sami People, Härnösand People´s High School, the study-association Studiefrämjandet, Centre for Sami Research (Vàrdduo) and Department of Political Science, Umeå University

The event was the third after the first and second that was carried out November 2020 and November 2021. The organizers have now established the event as a annual event and forum for activists, movements and scholars. The event gathered approximately 80 people at two venues; Umeå University and Klossen – a meeting place and cultural centre for civil society and other organisations in Ålidhem, Umeå.

Africities 2022. ADEP participated at the 9th edition of the Africities Summit in Kisumu, Kenya who hosted 6 000 participants for talks on the role of intermediary cities of Africa in the implementation of Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and the African Union Agenda 2063. ADEP partnered with the Cooperation Arena for Sustainable Development in Africa (CASDA), Another Development Foundation, Centre for Rural Medicine, a research and development unit within Region Västerbotten, Sweden and Lycksele Municipality, Sweden in organizing a special session on the history of collaborations between these parties, as well on collaborations with other partners.

Besides of hosting this special session, a number of other meetings took place in which talks about future collaborations was discussed.

I was the faciliator of the special session as well as moderator in other dialogues.

Nonviolence 2021. November 27th-28th 2021 Another Development Foundation, Swedish Fellowship of Reconcilitation, the Study-association Bilda and the Swedish section of Women´s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) organized a special national event on nonviolence. Partners in the project were Västerbotten for Human Rights, Umeå Association for the Sami People, Centre for Sami Research (Vàrdduo) and Department of Political Science, Umeå University

The event was the second after the first that was carried out November 2020. The organizers have now established the event as a annual event and forum for activists, movements and scholars. The location for the event 2021 was supposed to be Umeå Municipality, as well as Tràpphie in Umeå where a special session on Sapmi, resistance and nonviolence would be held. Due to the Corona pandemic, and governmental guidelines, the organizers decided to do it digitally this year as well. Nevertheless, the event gathered approximately 80 people in total. Some of the lectures and discussions were also open for the public, and attracted several hundres of viewers.

Machakos Stakeholder Dissemination Forum on Gender Equality (2021). June 29th-July 1st, The Government of Machakos County, Kenya and Robertsfors Municipality invited stakeholders to a special dissemination forum on gender equality.

The forum was officially launched by John Kilonzo, Chief Officer at the Department of Education and Skills Training. Besides of stakeholders from Machakos County and the national level in Kenya, the forum also provided a space for Johan Lilja, General Secretary of Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD) and Michael Hjelmåker, Deputy Head of Mission, Swedish Embassy in Nairobi to talk about the commitments from ICLD and Sweden on gender equality.

The forum was coordinated by a team from Machakos County who have worked with Robertsfors Municipality in the project ”Action for Gender Equality”. The team was assisted by Yvonne Anyango, Director of CASDA – Cooperation Arena for Sustainable Development in Africa who have been a consultant in the partnership between Machakos County and Robertsfors Municipality. I was the coordinator on the Swedish side, assigned by Robertsfors Municipality.

Kajiado County Dissemination Forum on Sustainable Waste and Water Management (2021). June 15th-17th, The Government of Kajiado County, Kenya and The City of Umeå invited stakeholders to a special dissemination forum on sustainable waste and water management.

The aim of the Kajiado Stakeholders Dissemination Forum was to share the successes, achievements and lessons learnt from the partnership between The Government of Kajiado County and The City of Umeå, to officially launch the Solid Waste Strategic Plan Documents and to present the ICT materials on waste and water management to the Sub-county officers for disseminating information. The forum also presented opportunities for dialogue for support from the development partners and for continued future collaboration with the City of Umeå as well as served as a platform to create strategies and an environment that support synergies for all involved parties and community in general.

The Kajiado stakeholder’s dissemination forum was officially launched by The Deputy Governor Martin Martine Moshisho. Other development partners who participated was Johan Lilja, General Secretary of Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD), Michael Hjelmåker, Deputy Head of Mission, Swedish Embassy in Nairobi, as well as representatives from UNDP and UN-habitat.

Coordinator of this conference was Yvonne Anyango, Kajiado County and Director of CASDA – Cooperation Arena for Sustainable Development in Africa. I was the co-coordinator of this conference, assigned by The City of Umeå to support Kajiado County Government in the planning of this forum, as well as on the follow up.

Conference for Transition – Dialogue on Post-growth Futures (2019). September 21st-22nd 2019 seven organisations co-created a conference on post-growth futures with 180 participants from the whole of Sweden attending the conference in The City of Umeå. Those organisations were The Transition Network Sweden, Expression Umeå, Study Promotion Association, Swedish Church, Rural Sweden, Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, Umeå University and Another Development Foundation.

The conference explored possible futures beyond growth measured by Gross National Product (GNP) which has become the dominant mode of measuring development. The conference is grounded on a citique of this way of thinking and acting for development as well as search for a regenerative development including justice, wellbeing and co-existence with nature and the non-human world.

I was the moderator for the first panel with Pella Thiel, chair of The Transition Network, Sweden and Karin Bodin, CEO of Polarbröd. I was also responsible for a workshop on nonviolence and civil resistance as prerequisite for sustainable transition together with Frida Heilert representing Extinction Rebellion.

Presentation of Not Our Story – Change it! at Dignity (2018), Swedish Annual Forum for Human Rights (2018) and Tunis Forum on Gender Equality (2019). Since ADEP Ltd was approved funding from Swedish Institute June 2017 working with partners in eight countries (Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia and Sweden) against gender-based violence and for freedom from violence through creative media in the framework of Creative Force Program, ADEP has presented this collaboration at several international events organized by a number of national and international organisations (for example UNIZON, Center for Responsed-based Practice, Canada, The Canadian Embassy in Sweden,  The Government of Tunisia, The Government of Sweden, UNDP and UN Women). The name of the international campaign is Not Our Story – Change it! A key-partner in this collaboration is Another Development Foundation.

Whole Earth? Day in Umeå, Sweden, September (2015). Project manager for an international event organized by Umeå University, Association of International Affairs at Umeå University and Hard Rain Project in collaboration with The City of Umeå, Region Västerbotten, Västerbottens week for sustainability (SEE), The County Administrative Board of Västerbotten and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The Swedish Forum for Human Rights, Umeå, Sweden (2014). Initiator and project manager for the event ”Raising Voices for Rights” – one of the biggest events for human rights in Europe with 120 seminars, 60 mini-seminars, fairs for organizations and more than 3000 participants. The forum is a collaboration between approximately 80-100 organizations from civil society, public authorities and academia. Hard Rain/Whole Earth?, Umeå, Sweden (2012). Project manager for an international event on global sustainability organized by Umeå University, The City of Umeå, Region Västerbotten, Västerbottens week for sustainability (SEE), The County Administrative Board of Västerbotten and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The event was held at Aula Nordica, Umeå University, September 18th, 2012 gathering 600 people.

Green Solutions Week in Machakos, Kenya (2011). Project manager together with Nicholas Nzioka from The Municipality of Machakos for an international Conference on sustainable local and regional development. All local authorities in Kenya were invited together with guests and experts from other parts of the world. Organizers were The Machakos City Council, The Municipality of Robertsfors, Association for Local Governments in Kenya (ALGAK) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The conference was held at Garden Hotel in Machakos City, April 17-20th gathering 500 people.

Commitment on Climate Justice at Sida (2009). Project manager together with Dag Jonzon from Sida for an international conference on climate justice for civil society organizations as well as other organizations. The conference was held at Sida Partnership Forum, May 25-28th gathering more than 200 people.

Religion and Development at Sida (2009). Analyst and writer at an international seminar organized by Swedish Curch, Swedish Mission Council, Diakonia and Swedish Pentacostal Churces. The assignment was done in collaboration with Fryklunds Communication. The seminar was held at Sida Partnership Forum April 26-28th gathering 60 people.

Civil Society on Climate Change and Justice at Sida (2008). Analysis and journalism together with Citizen Media and Global Reporting during an international conference on climate and development for civil society organizations as well as invited experts. The Conference was held at Sida Civil Society Center in Härnösand, August 25-27th gathering 130 people.

The Role of Civil Society on Peacebuilding and Conflict Managment at Sida (2003). Project manager for an international conference for civil society organizations in the context of my work as a program officer for humanitarian assistance and conflict management. The conference was held at Sida Civil Society Center in Härnösand, May 2015 gathering 125 people.

The First International Eco-municipality Conference in Helsingborg (2008). Planner for and facilitator at an international conference for municipalities and cities. Organziers were The Swedish Association for Eco-municipalities, The Natural Step and Sustainable Sweden Association. The conference was held in The City of Helsingborg, June 2008 gathering 100 participants.

Sustainable Municipalities in the North in Umeå (2008). Facilitator in workshops at conference for municipalities in the northern part of Sweden. Organizers were the companies Esam AB, Sustainum and the foundation The Natural Step. The conference was held in Umeå 2008 gathering 50 people.

Co-operation between Kenya and Sweden for Sustainable Development in Kenya (2007). Facilitator at a conference for Swedish and Kenyan municipalities with invitation to the minister for local authorities, member of the national assembly in Kenya, UN-bodies, NGOs and people from informal settlements in Nairobi who also participated at the conference. The conference was held at Masai Lodge outside Nairobi autumn 2007 gathering 70 people.

Green Solutions at Sida (2009). Planner for and analyst in a national multi-actor seminar on sustainable solutions. The seminar was held att Sida Partnership Forum autumn 2009 gathering 25 participants.

Public seminars organized by civil society and universities (1985-2002). Planner and coordinator of public seminars on various themes as a member of and employed by Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society and Umeå University with international organizations and experts invited.

International projects:

Project manager for a partnership between Center for Rural Medicine, Region Västerbotten, Umeå Municipality and Kisumu County Government, Kenya. The partnership also include other partners in Sweden and Kenya; Umeå University, Biosphere Area Vindeln River-Juhtàthakka, Siaya County, Homa Bay County, Busia County, Migori County. The project started 2023 and will be finalized 2025. The project is funded by Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD).

Project coordinator and project manager for a partnership between Centre for Rural Medicine, Region Västerbotten and Homa Bay County Government, Kenya on governance for youth health. The project started 2023 and will be finalized 2025. The project is funded by Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD).

Advisor and facilitator for a partnership between Robertsfors Municipality and Machakos County Government on climate adaptation and mitigation. The project started 2023 and will be finalized 2025. The project is funded by Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD).

Advisor and facilitator for a partnership between Lycksele Municipality, Sweden and Homa Bay County Government on sustainable waste and water management, a project that work in close collaboration with Center for Rural Medicine/Region Västerbotten and Homa Bay County Government. The project started 2019 and will be finalized 2023. The project is funded by Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD). During a short period I have been contracted by Lycksele Municipality to be the coordinator and project manager due to staff turn-over in Lycksele Municipality.

Project manager for an international project including partners from eight countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zambia and Sweden) working through media against gender based violence and for freedom from violence as a human right. The project is funded by Swedish Institute in the framwork of the programme Creative Force. The collaboration started with an inceptionphase 2017 moving to a project starting 2018 and ending 2019.

Project manager for a collaboration between WANA Institute, Jordan and Another Development Foundation. The project is funded by Swedish Institute with activities during 2018 and 2019 in two separate phases; seedfunding phase and project phase. The project support youth in Jordan who will work on SDG 5, 11 and 16 through film and photo.

Project coordinator and manager for collaboration between Robertsfors Municipality, Machakos Municipality and Machakos County Government, Kenya 2007-2015 with ambition to proceed 2016-2018. Finalized projects are: a) Developing strategic plans for sustainable local development, b) Developing resource and information centres for local sustainable development and c) Youth for democracy and human rights. The partnership has been funded by ICLD. A new project on gender equality has been developed during a phase called development/broadening in line with the guidelines from ICLD. This application was approved December 2017. The project will run 2018-2020.

Project manager for collaboration between Robertsfors Municipality and Busia Municipality, Uganda 2014-2018. The project has the aim of establishing help-desks for sustainable livelihoods in both municipalities. The partnership is funded by ICLD.

Advisor and facilitator in a collaboration between The City of Umeå and Kajiado County Government, Kenya 2014-2019. The inceptionphase is finalized and applications for a partnership was approved December 2016 by the funder. The aim of the project is to build capacity for effective, transparent and accountable waste- and water management. The partnership is funded by ICLD.

Project manager, advisor and facilitator in a collaboration between Region Västerbotten and Elgeyo Marakwet County Government, Kenya 2016-2018. The inceptionphase is finalized and application for a partnership has been aproved. The aim of the project is to build capacity in both organizations for sustainable tourism. The partnership is funded by ICLD.

Advisor and facilitator in a dialogue between The County Council of Västerbotten, The Center for Rural Medicine and Homa Bay County Government, Kenya during 2015. The dialogue resulted in an application to ICLD March 2017 for a partnership on rural medicine with focus on telemedicine. The application for an inceptionphase was approved December 2017. This phase was finalized 2018 with an application for 3-year project with a focus on governance for equitable health. The application was approved December 2018. The project was implemented 2019-2022 with me as a the project manager.

Advisor and educator in a partnership between The City of Umeå and Cao Giay District, Hanoi, Vietnam who are working within the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) with stakeholders in the formal educational system. The role has been writing the applications to Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy on two occassion – when the collaboration started and 2018 when the partners wanted to continue their partnershp. The role has also been the one of an educator on the international dialogue on sustainable development and on ESD.

Advisor and member of steering group in a collaboration between The County Council of Västerbotten and The City of Yogjakarta, Indonesia 2013-2016. The partnership work with capacity development and communication for dengue prevention. The partnership is funded by ICLD.

Advisor and resource person together with the environmental journalist Dag Jonzon to Hard Rain Project 2010-2019 – a communication and advocacy project based on world famous exhibitions produced by the photographer Mark Edwards with support from Bob Dylan and Lloyd Timberlake. The exhibition has been displayed all over the world for more than 15 million people. Besides of being project manager for events at Umeå University in collaboration with other organizations, I have also helped finding sites for the exhibitions in Kenya, Uganda and Indonesia.

Project manager for exchange between Center for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Umeå University and Henry Martin Institute in Hyderbad, India 2001 on conflict management and peace building. The partnership was funded by Center for Interdisciplinary Sciences and Sida.

Follow-up and evaluation of international projects:

As a program officer for humanitarian assistance and conflict management at Sida Civil Society Centre follow-up and evaluation of projects were conducted in Somalia (2002) and Zambia (2003). Within the areas of duties I was a member of a special group working with follow-up and evaluation of programs and projects. I have also evaluated development projects in The County of Västerbotten funded by The European Union (2005-2007) as well as other projects on racism, xenophobia, integration and migration assigned by The City of Umeå (2012 and 2016-2022) The Swedish Government (1993-1994) and The County Administrative Board of Västerbotten (2013-2014).

Participation in international conference and exchanges:

Participation in and members of international seminars, conferences and exchanges through Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society, Umeå University and Sida, ADEP Ltd and Another Development Foundation in Norway (1993), Hungary (1993), UK (1985 and 1994), Russia (1994-1995), France (1996), Netherlands (1996), and US (1995-1996, 1999-2000, 2002-2004), New Zeeland (2017), Tunisia (2019), Sri Lanka (2019) and Kenya (2011, 2015, 2020, 2021 and 2022). In some of these conferences and exchanges I have presented academic papers which later on have been published. I have also participated at numerous events and conferences in Sweden on global challenges of different kind.

Educational work at Umeå University, Swedish University of Agriculture Sciences, Swedish National Agency for Higher Vocational Education, Malmö University and Uppsala University (1991-2023): 

During these period I have educated and tutored students at 5 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and 12 departements in broad variation of subjects, courses and programmes; courses on all levels on graduate- and master level in Peace- and Conflict Studies and at an International Programme for Crisis- and Conflict Management, lectures in Development Studies, Minor Field Studies, Humanecology, Environmental History, Global Challenges, Peoples of the Baltic, Culture and Identity, International Trends in Formal Education, Environment and Society, Globalization and Global Health, Postcolonialism, The Culture of Power and Resistance, Migrationprocesses, Dynamics in Tropical Land Use, Global Perspectives on Social Change and Digital Media, Media, Communication and Sustainable Development.

My ”home departements” have been Center for Interdisciplinary Sciences and Department of Political Science at Umeå University (1992-2002, 2008-2023), even if I also had some long-term collaboration with other universities.

Educational work at Sida Civil Society Center och Sida Partnership Forum (2002-2004, 2008-2009, 2013-2015): 

As the programme officer for humanitarian assistance and conflict managment I have planned, educated and evaluated educations and trainings for various target-groups working with international development cooperation. This educational work has continued when I registred my company in courses for Minor Field Students, Practioners, Junior Programme Officers (JPO) and Special Assistant to Regional Coordinators (SARC), i.e. young employees in UN-organizations.

Educational work for organisations and in schools (1985-): 

As a member of and employee for Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society I lectured on various themes (armaments, disarmaments, arms trade, peacebuilding, non-violence etc) in a multitude of upper secondary schools in The City of Luleå and in some schools in The City of Umeå between 1985-1990. After that period I have continued to doing lectures and meet teachers and pupils in schools as well as participants in events organized by for example NGOs, political parties and churces.

Rönnbäck, I och Kalla, B (2011). Lärande för hållbar utveckling. Innovativt nordiskt utbyte. Förstudie och diskussionsunderlag för eventuellt etablerande av ett sk Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) i norra Sverige inom arbetsområdet lärande för hållbar utveckling. Förstudien finansierades av Nordiska ministerrådet, och ägts av Umeå kommun. Förstudien har resulterat i att Region Västerbotten, Umeå kommun och Umeå universitet, i samverkan med andra regionala aktörer ansöker till UN University i Yokohama om etablering av ett RCE.

Rönnbäck, I (2012). RCE North Sweden Application to UNU-IAS in Yokohama, Japan. Ansökan för etablering av RCE i norra Sverige. Ansökan skrevs på uppdrag av Umeå kommun, Region Västerbotten och Umeå universitet.

Rönnbäck, I, Edlund, C, Heldius, B och Strandberg, M (2013). Utvärdering av projektet Gender Innovation Vision and Empowerment (GIVE). Projektet var ett arbetsmarknads- och jämställdhetsprojekt riktat till somaliska kvinnor i Sverige, med flera ansvariga organisationer; VIVA kompetenscentrum i Umeå, Samordningsförbundet Umeå, Arbetsförmedlingen, Socialtjänsten i Umeå kommun och Länsstyrelsen i Västerbotten.

Rönnbäck (2014). Utvärdering av projektet Kvotflykting i Västerbotten. Projektet samordnas och leds av Länsstyrelsen Västerbotten med fyra kommuner samverkande; Lycksele, Norsjö, Skellefteå och Vilhelmina.

Rönnbäck, I (2022). Salam familj. Utvärdering av ett projekt som genomförts av Umeå kommun finansierat av Asyl-, migrations- och integrationsfonden (AMIF).

I have written more than sixty applications for international projects. In almost all of these cases the applications have been approved.

Journalistic work for peace, human rights and sustainability (1985-2019): 

During these period I have written articles and texts for the purpos of outreach and advocacy in various magazines and newspapers; Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet, Norrbottens Kuriren, Norrländska Socialdemokraten, Västerbottens Kuriren, Invandrare och Minoriteter as well as in tabloids, newsletters and reports from different events and projects. I have also written some of the texts to the exhibition Hard Rain/Whole Earth.
